                    Stress facts!

The cost of absenteeism to small and large companies.

In smaller companies, one day of absenteeism costs an average of R400 per employee and larger ones, R800. If, for instance, in a company employing 500 people, you were able to reduce absenteeism due to illness from 5% to 4%, this would save the company R730 000 per annum.   Figures taken from “News on Human Resources Management”; Special Report 2007

Is stress sucking you dry?

Berenice De La Croix, Learning in Practice

Unless you're a guru living on a mountain, you can’t avoid stress. But you can prevent it from sucking the juice out of your organisation.

Stress is a problem in many industrialized countries. According to an AP-Ipsos survey of 10 industrialized countries (released in December 2006) about 75% of people experience stress on a daily basis.

"The level of stress in fast-paced technological societies has been accelerating," says Gershen Kaufman, practising clinical psychologist and professor emeritus at Michigan State University.

A major factor in the rising stress levels is the lack of work-life balance. For example, in Canada 40% of employees work more than 50 hours per week, compared to 25% in 1990; 52% of employees take work home with them, up from 31% in 1990; and 28% feel that family and friends resent the number of hours they spend working.

The cost of stress can cripple organizations. Stressed employees experience irritability, mood swings, lowered performance, sleep disturbance, irrational and negative thoughts, and an impaired immune system. Research in rats suggests that stress destroys brain cells in the hippocampus, the area of the brain that processes learning, memory and emotion (The Journal of Neuroscience, 2007).

Ironically, employees who give everything to the organization, forgetting about their own wellbeing, eventually have little to give. When we spend a lot of time in the fight and flight mode of stress, which shuts down resources not needed for survival, our capacity for relationships, problem solving and creativity suffer.

Our ability to meet our customers’ needs suffers.

Stress is a drain on your organisation's productivity, morale and sense of humour. When you stress proof your organisation not only will everyone feel better about coming to work, your bottom line will improve.

Stress proofing is good business. Companies that create supportive workplaces not only save on costs related to absenteeism and staff turnover, but they also attract the best people.

Harvard professor Juliet Schor has coined the term Downshifters to describe a new breed of professionals who are not prepared to sacrifice quality of life for a good income.

Is your company attractive to Down shifters?
